To all who keep a light burning
The cycle's first strict variation-form: a passacaglia on a descending four-bar ground that turns like a dark year. Over its relentless return Voss layers the slow failing of a distant star — the voice climbing in successive variations as the harmonic floor sinks beneath it, the gap between them the song's true subject. Here the architecture of Das Verlöschen first shows itself: not a sequence of moods but a single mechanism winding down.
