Baritone Repertoire

A working guide to the solo baritone catalogue — grouped by tradition, from dramatic arias to German Lieder.

The baritone has always been short of new repertoire. The great cycles — Schubert's Winterreise, Schumann's Dichterliebe — sit higher, written for tenor; the bass owns the oratorio gravity. The dramatic baritone, the voice of doubt and weight and middle age, is comparatively unwritten-for in the modern era.

Nikolai Voss writes for that voice because it is his own. Below is the solo catalogue — 75 songs and arias — grouped by tradition. At its centre is the fourteen-song cycle Das Verlöschen, one of the few modern baritone cycles conceived on the scale of the great ones.

Dramatic arias & scenas (19)

Lieder & art songs (29)

Ballades & narrative songs (9)

Sacred & elegiac (9)

Other solo works (9)
