To all who keep a light burning
The dramatic crisis. The singer confronts the pilot-light of a shuttered childhood house — the last flame in an abandoned home — and the declamation breaks free of strict song into operatic recitative and arioso. At the climax the lamp motif screams in inversion over a destabilised orchestra-shadow; it is the one moment the cycle raises its voice.
