The penultimate song returns to the lighthouse already known from Voss's earlier catalogue — the keeper's beam darkened at last — so that Das Verlöschen quietly acknowledges its own world. The harmony has now fallen to the very threshold of the final B-flat minor; the lamp motif is heard only as a shadow in the piano's lowest octave.
