To all who keep a light burning
The cycle's second strict variation-form, and its most unsparing: a chaconne built on the lamp motif itself, now sunk into the bass as a ground. Each variation strips away a layer of the texture above it until only the bare motif remains — a flame reduced to its own outline. Time is heard to circle and narrow toward the end.
